CURIOSITY KILLS THE CAT

Curiosity Kills The Cat is a 2d interactive mystery story. The player will play a role as a cat to find out what happened to the scientist father of the 12-years-old blinded girl in a Nordic freezing small town. As we created this game, we kept asking ourselves a question. That is whether our experiences, such as judgments about something and someone, are objective and true over time. People tend to trust their own subjective judgments and experiences, and this habit carries the risk of misjudging the actual situation. In the game, we try to let the player carefully play the kitty, triggering from her point of view, to discover a story and finally fill the story with a player's own inner ending through their own imagination.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

  1. Telling a mystery through gameplay from a cat's PoV.

  2. Create a rich emotional experience arc in relatively short levels.

  3. Build players' curiosity in their mental model and surprise them over time.

  4. Keep hiding the truth in the engaging gameplay until revealed in the final.

MY ROLE

(Game Designer/Producer)

  • Designed 4 levels and gameplay mechanisms based on the story arc and beats from scratch.

  • Implemented art assets into levels in Unity and solve art implementation technique problems.

  • Iterated level design and puzzle logic based on playtesting analysis.

  • Responsible for the project scope and team development schedule, tracked the progress and optimized the dev process.

  • Collaborated with the team in Agile.

  • Analysis from the playtests and wrap-up it into insights for iteration.

  • Initiate, maintain and update the design documents (Design Treatment and Design Macro Sheet).

  • Create parts of pixel arts about the monster and basement level environment.
